How Twitter Spaces is Changing The Narratives of Conversations In The Nigerian Media

It’s interesting to see how the social media space is becoming multifunctional more than a marketing tool, direct information exchange, and recently a virtual gathering place. It is fast becoming a powerful tool for meaningful conversations, impact, and positive influence. Twitter space is a live audio conversation streamed in real-time on the Twitter app. This feature was launched in Nov. 2020 and can be used by android users and IOS. This feature supports talks or conversations on any topic mostly related to what you do or who you are.

I have been in spaces that also talk about issues affecting the average Nigerian and our collective community. This is one of its kind; I remember when these conversations were held on television and radio and which has been a long time ago. It seems far-fetched and bringing it back on a social media platform with so many new perspectives with practical insights did rekindle a sense of responsibility for my community.

The Twitter space has an interesting feature that shows when someone in your network starts or joins a Space, a circle with a purple ring will pop up at the top of your screen in the fleets section. The purple circle will include the Space host’s profile picture, username, and the number of attendees. And all you need to do is to join in. This has barred barriers to getting in rooms with thought leaders, connecting with them, and having raw unfiltered conversations around issues relating to their industry or society.

The Twitter Space is changing the way conversations take place especially in this time and age and in the Nigerian media in general. This is possible because of the features that come with it. Let's take a look at the ways this Twitter product is shaping the narrative:

Convenience

Twitter spaces are intriguing because it is so easy to be in the same virtual space with a leader or dignitaries and other personality whose views, works and impact has shaped our environment. There is no barrier of location or time. All you need to do is to join in on the Twitter app. These people come on live and share firsthand, unfiltered information with the audience who ordinarily will have no access to their knowledge or what they have to share. It is so convenient that you access Twitter space from anywhere in the world.

Wider Scope

The live factor makes Twitter Spaces raw, unfiltered yet manageable, inclusive, and accessible to all. To put it in another way, Twitter Spaces is a great place to have conversations and bounce ideas off with like-minded people. There is more reach than ever before, twitter spaces are not just limited to your followers. People who are not your follower can join in your space.

Flexibility

Twitter space is like an open floor where anyone can start a space to have a meaningful conversation from the comfort of their home. While you can invite speakers and have a co-host it does not require any stringent steps to follow. Everything you need to do is included in the Twitter app. You can have quite many people join in the conversation. Your listeners can actively be part of the conversation using emojis to indicate or react to the conversation, more like feedback. There is also the feature that allows you to request to speak in case you want to ask a question or contribute to the conversation. This is so comfy and eliminates the stress of gathering physically and handling logistics and because it’s audio it eliminates the issue of being camera ready. You can be just anywhere and in whatever way to be in Twitter space because all that is needed is your voice.

Connection

Twitter spaces help builds connections. When you come into space to speak and share with an audience. It creates a good way of connecting with your audience or the listener. They can hear you talk which is more powerful than any other medium. From most spaces that I joined, I've been able to connect more with the speaker and hosts in the space.

I believe more than ever that social media has completely altered and challenged the status quo where communication and in this case conversation are a concern. Giving opportunity and access to information, people, and relevant insights that can positively impact others.
