5 Ways to Declutter Your Mind and Boost Your Creative Genius by Anosike Agnes Obianuju

The mind powers the body, especially your mental faculty - The Brain. What you feed determines what you say, do, and think. It's pure logic. If you feed a child an unbalanced diet regularly, the child will be unhealthy. The same thing applies to your mind. When you are exposed to irrelevant things often, and in this context, things that don't stimulate your creativity, then you are likely not to be a creative person.

Decluttering your mind to boost your creative genius involves a form of 'Eidetic Reduction,' but this time, you are not doing away with everything you know, only those things that are of no use to your development. Below are some tips that will help you manage to declutter your mind, thereby, boosting your creativity.

1. Regulate Your Inflow

You have to watch what goes into you. What kinds of information do you take in? Are they educational, informative, critical, creative, etc? Or are they just comical, random social media posts, memes, gossip, etc? I am not saying the latter set of information is bad, but when they make up more than 30% of what you read, hear, think, see, etc, your I.Q will not be on the high side. So it is advisable to narrow your focus to the former set of information.

2. Don't Just Consume — Exchange Ideas

A critical mind doesn't just take things at face value. It is questioning and objective. When you get new information, do you try to make sense of it, or do you just consume it? Understanding things, filtering information you get, and buttressing them are great signs of creativity and mind decluttering.

3. Get Some Sleep

This is a natural ingredient that makes the mind healthy. The mind needs rest. Only a healthy mind can generate good ideas, think up innovative concepts, and execute plans. So, no matter how engaging your day is, ensure you don't work into your sleeping hours. When the brain doesn't get enough rest (sleep), it eats itself up.

4. Meditate

This is a very good mental exercise. It strengthens the mind's powers of focus and concentration. It is not easy to stay and focus on something for a very long time. This is why you must practice frequently. Try concentrating on a particular thing for some time without getting distracted, it will aid your ability to meditate. Yoga is a good exercise for meditation.

5. Take Up Difficult Tasks

Don't shy away from difficult tasks. An average human being likes the easy way out. Don't be that human. Get used to understanding every step and process of whatever activity you do, regardless of how mentally demanding it is. Difficult tasks healthily stretch your mind, enabling it to think outside the box. Some games help in making the mind active. Chess is a good example.

Life is more fulfilling when you stay connected to your environment, your relationships, and yourself. However, life can be overbearing and you tend toward mental exhaustion. You become disorganized, detached, worried, and confused. It could even lead to losing focus and being completely unproductive. And just like your cabinets, your mind needs to be tidied up from time to time. Clean up and delete baggage that is taking up your mind space.

Everyone has experienced this at some point in life and to return to the track, one needs to declutter the mind and unlock the best version of themselves. As such, in this blog post, I will be sharing 5 ways to help you declutter your mind and keep you going on to achieve your goals;

1. Get some sleep

Sleep is not only meant for your tired body but also the mind. Do well to check with yourself to see if you're lacking good sleep. You rejuvenate when you get enough sleep that your body and mind require to function properly.

2. Journaling

Journaling is an activity that helps you to transfer your thoughts to a journal which can be on paper or mobile device. This way you free your mind from that which is bugging you. It helps a lot to discover things in your mind that you thought were not there. There is also a deep sense of relief that comes with journaling and the best part is you don't need to write perfectly but write to get thoughts out of your head.

3. Declutter your space

When your workspace or your surroundings is cluttered it creates a visual clutter without you knowing it. And this can affect your thought process.

Keep your space free from baggage and organized, there are more chances you will get things done than when it's not.

4. Avoid Multitasking

Doing several tasks at a time does not yield many results. You will make more impact when you focus on one task at a time. Put in your best and focus on one task, get it done before you move to the next one. It's better to complete a task than to have two or more tasks uncompleted. Meanwhile, if you cannot fully desist from multitasking, try your best to reduce the activities you take on per time so that you do not totally break down.

5. Create your Priorities

At the beginning of each day, set aside time to create a to-do list. List the task according to the level of importance and pay attention to the important tasks or those approaching deadline. When you do this over time, you will discover the things that are important to you and the ones that are not. And you feed the things that matter to you and starve the ones that don't which will have a positive effect on your life.

Conclusion

These options above are a good place to start when you need to declutter your mind - but most importantly, please find out what works for you and stick to it. Many people have argued that the mind is originally a 'Tabula Rasa”, that is, (an empty slate) at birth, and it only contains what it has been fed. Many others have argued that the mind has innate forms of knowledge, one of which is 'common sense.' Regardless of the argument, you want to support, there is a need to understand that the mind powers whatever you engage. So, you must ensure that it is filled with relevant things, as it is the seat of Creativity.
