Gerontology: The advantages of Old Age

Gerontology is the branch of science that deals with the problems of aged people. The aged  are very important in our societies . They are indispensible and will forever remain relevant to our societies.

When does old age begin?
The poet Dante believed old age started at 45. A survey of the British public concluded that it starts at 59 – the older the respondent, the greater the number of years they considered old. But the United Nations and most scientists define it as any age after 60.

Africans are very respectful. Most elderly are kept well and taken care of .For Koreans, the 60th and 70th birthdays are prominent life events, which are commemorated with large-scale family parties and feasts. As in Chinese culture, the universal expectation in Korea is that roles reverse once parents age, and that it is an adult child's duty — and an honorable one at that — to care for his or her parents

Like the Chinese and the Koreans, the Japanese prize filial piety and expect children to dutifully tend to their parents. But Japan also faces the unique problem of tending to an increasingly elderly population.
According to Social Gerontology: A Multidisciplinary Perspective, 7.2 percent of the Japanese population will be 80 or older in 2020 (compared to 4.1 percent in the U.S.), which will likely lead to a host of new problems for the country. Adult diapers are already outselling baby diapers, and the pension system is on course to dry up.

1) Brain plasticity.  It was once believed that we were born with a certain number of brain cells that slowly died off as we age.  Science now knows that our brains continue to grow neurons as we age and can reshape itself in response to what it learns. Even learning to juggle, learn a new language or play an instrument can cause significant brain changes in hearing, memory and hand movements.  Plus, studies confirm that our vocabulary not only continues to grow as we do, it become richer and provides more subtle ways of expressing ourselves.  As long as we use it, we won’t lose it!

2) Less negativity—higher self esteem.  Researcher Ulrich Orth from the University of Basel studied thousands of 18 to 89 year olds and discovered that regardless of demographic and social status, the older we get the more negativity diminishes and the higher our self-esteem climbs.

3) Clearer priorities.  Studies done by Michael Marsiske Ph.D. suggest that older adults tend to perceive time in a way that makes them “increasingly aware that our years on this Earth are limited.”   He goes on to say that, “This awareness helps explain the choices that older adults tend to make: to spend time with a smaller, tighter circle of friends and family, to pay more attention to good news than to bad news, and to seek out positive encounters and avoid negative ones.” In other words, aging helps us let go of the trivial and focus on what is most important.

So value the elderly.
